Sartre’s later work (in particular, Critique of Dialectical Reason) provides a clear insight into the way social structures and groupings are created and maintained in the world. As well, Merleau-Ponty’s work begins from the presumption that we are by virtue of our very existence social creatures and moves from there to attempt to understand how we are social, in what ways our relations with others are tainted, and how it is that we can reclaim a more humane set of social relations for ourselves.

Decades before Giddens’s discussion of what he calls “structuration”—the way in which the practices of human individuals display and replicate what sociologists analyze and describe as “structures”—the works of Sartre and Merleau-Ponty sidestep the agency/structure problem by examining the social situatedness of human beings. This issue of situatedness in existentialism allows us the chance to see that resisters intuit the existence of linkages between resistance and ethics through the lived practice of resistance.

As such, the phenomenology of this awareness becomes crucial, not merely for bringing about social change but also for acting in accordance with their freedom. Freedom, as we have seen, requires an orientation to the conditions of 36 / resisting ethics one’s existence or one’s situation; what Sartre would call “stupidity” (Sartre 1993b: 312), and what we might otherwise call “bad faith,” would be the absence of this orientation to the phenomenology of one’s situation, to the unfree manner in which they acted, and to the future, as there is no project with which one acts in the present.
