Becky became very interested and put her book down. The family were able to identify the issue, and came up with a range of solutions based around rotas and turn-taking. Becky wanted to know that she could use the room on particular nights so that she could have her friends around.
They were particularly shocked by the presence of very disturbed people, violent incidents that occurred during visits and the fact that Tom had told them that he had been offered street drugs by other residents on the ward. They removed him from the ward and admitted him to a private hospital where he spent 8 weeks. However, this was proving to be a drain on their finances, and they were also unhappy with the treatment he received. They felt he was becoming ‘zombie-like’ and that the only treatment was medication, which they felt was too strong for him, resulting in him being ‘doped up and uncommunicative’.
This certainly applied with the therapists delivering BFT who were his social worker (who has been involved for many years) and his CPN. We will always be grateful for the way they handled our BFT programme, which was done sympathetically but in a very supportive way to each of us. The same two people remained with the programme for most of the modules so providing continuity, but importantly, this enabled them to gain a detailed understanding of the make-up of the family and the problems faced by each family member.
