That Gerard Manley Hopkins revived the alliterative tradition. He experimented a great deal. These lines from Spring suggest how: Nothing is so beautiful as Spring – When weeds, in wheels, shoot long and lovely and lush; Thrush’s eggs look little low heavens, and thrush Through the echoing timber does so rinse and wring The ear, it strikes like lightnings to hear him sing; Later Ezra Pound also experimented with it. In 1912 he published Ripostes, which contained a fine rendering of the OE elegiac lyric The Seafarer.
The other three were the Book of Mencius, a collection of dialogues of the 4th c. bc scholar, and two chapters of the Book of Ritual, known as the Great Learning (Ta Hsueh) and the Doctrine of the Mean (Chung Yung). Most of these texts were not actually authored by Confucius, and it is likely that portions of the Analects were compiled by his disciples. The core doctrines of the Analects are deeply conservative, espousing the attainment of wisdom through learning, informed by reverence for the past, tradition, parents, state, and early exemplary rulers in Chinese history.
