But no adornment could disguise the camp’s mission for long. Every day, five thousand Jews were transported from Warsaw to Treblinka. Thousands came from other ghettos also. 12 Chelmno, Belzec, Sobibór, and Treblinka were created purely for the annihilation of the Jews. The two other extermination centers began as prison and labor camps. They had been established in what was then the farthest reaches of German conquest to serve as outposts for continued expansion. Reported as spontaneous reactions of the people to the assassination, the rampage was actually carefully organized by high-ranking leaders of Hitler’s Security Service, SS, and Gestapo. From one o’clock in the morning of November 10 until evening that day, German citizens set fire to 191 synagogues, 171 Jewish houses and apartments, and other buildings. They smashed the windows of seven thousand Jewish-owned stores and carried their contents to their own homes.
